Fostering
Seven years ago I had no idea what fostering a homeless hound would be like. I kind of thought it might be like “the basset of the month club”. Surely many others shared the same passion about this breed that I do, and I couldn’t possibly get attached to my foster as I would not have him/her for long. This could not have been further from the truth. In 6 years, it was my humblest pleasure to invite every foster into my home and treat every foster like my OWN dog. The length of time I had a foster ranged from two weeks to six months. Did I get attached? You bet! To some more than others. Some had never been socialized and were scared. Some were completely housebroken, well mannered, and in need of no vet attention. Why didn’t their owner go looking for this wonderful dog? I kept a photo album of my fosters to share their stories. When people ask me if it was difficult to “give them up” my answer is a resounding no for two reasons:
1. I KNEW that the rescue was going to find the BEST home for this dog, and
I, as the foster home, played an integral role in the placement of my foster.
2. It is much easier to find an adoptive home than a foster home.
If you have ever adopted a wonderful loving companion from a rescue, thank its foster home, by becoming a foster home!
